How to Get Involved
Step 1: Register Your Interest Send an email to our Indigenous Engagement Officer, Carmen Perez at carmen.perez@griffith.edu.au with a short statement about the projects you would like to be involved with. You’re welcome to include images of your work samples. We encourage engagement from all CAIA students (first year and beyond), alumni as well as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in QCAD Design and Visual art programs.
Step 2: Project Matching LiveCAIA will reach out to students who align with projects as they come into the studio. We’ll share information about the project type, timeline, and project fee. Remember to check your email regularly and reply to any projects you’re keen to engage with.
Step 3: Project Discussion & Progress Designers and visual artists can opt in for a meeting to discuss project details and ask questions. While you work on the project, you’ll be supported by the Creative Director, CAIA academic staff and Client Manager, who will support communication with the client and admin process. You will also have access to a computer with Adobe Software, as well as the Liveworm design students who can support you with technical/digital aspects of the project.
Step 4: Project Iteration & Completion Projects often go through cycles of feedback and changes until the outcome is just right. At the end, you’ll be asked to confirm that you approve the outcome before it’s sent to the client. Once the project is finished and delivered, the Client Manager will walk you through the admin processes to ensure the project fee reaches your bank account.
What Types of Projects Does LiveCAIA Handle?
There’s a wide range of projects, including:
- Artwork for clothing (e.g., t-shirts for events, sports jerseys)
- Mural designs
- Book layouts
- Reconciliation Action Plan artwork
- Branding for new businesses or events
- Car and bus wraps
- Digital and analogue design/art projects (the studio will support you if you need help with digital work)
Payment and Project Fees
All Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students and alumni who engage with LiveCAIA are paid for their work. Before commencing a project, you’ll be provided with project fee details, allowing you to determine if you’d like to opt in to complete the project in exchange for the available fee. A percentage of each project is retained by the studio to support operational costs and administrative tasks. We will always be transparent with you about project budgets – this is a great opportunity to build skills and confidence when discussing project fees.
Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP)
It’s important to understand your Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property (ICIP) rights. Before starting any project, the Client Manager will discuss the relevant ICIP and paperwork with you to help you make an informed decision about your engagement. This includes how the client can use your work in the future and what your long-term rights are to the work you create. Knowing your intellectual property rights is important. This is a valuable opportunity that we hope you can take into your professional practice in the future.
Credit Towards Your Courses
Depending on the project, you may have the option to connect your LiveCAIA project to a course (or not). If you’d like to discuss how a LiveCAIA project might be suitable for course credit, speak with the CAIA Program Director or Course Convenor.
